जनक उवाच - 
कथं ज्ञानमवाप्नोति, 
कथं मुक्तिर्भविष्यति।
वैराग्य च कथं प्राप्तमेतद 
ब्रूहि मम प्रभो॥१-१॥



वयोवृद्ध राजा जनक, बालक अष्टावक्र से पूछते हैं - हे प्रभु, ज्ञान की प्राप्ति कैसे होती है, मुक्ति कैसे प्राप्त होती है, वैराग्य कैसे प्राप्त किया जाता है, ये सब मुझे बताएं॥१॥
