We have set ideas or concepts about ourselves and our own nature, about our likes and dislikes, our abilities and inabilities; about our very nature. This is what really restricts us. This is what makes us unhappy.

Just have a thought in your mind like that you do not like noise. This one thought can bother you. The other day someone mentioned about a boy. He didn't like being with people or crowds. He liked being by himself; he liked he company of only one person - himself. Now, have you ever thought why one has such concepts and ideas?

Someone says he does not like milk. Someone says he does not like this or that 'thing'. Why we don't like some things? As human beings, everybody likes some things and dislikes others. These are preferences. But if they go deep inside you, if they seep into every cell of your body, then that is your bondage. That is the problem of Self.

You can have preferences. You may prefer a quieter place to a noisier place. We prefer food with the right amount of salt to food with no salt. It is all right. But if there is a little less salt in the food and our craving or aversion is very strong, then that simple thing is enough to shake you; to throw you off balance. Our identification is the real crisis. We think we like this and we don't like that because of past experiences. Some experiences happened, for instance, you were sick as a child and you didn't like milk. This continued when you grew older and you started disliking it, because every time you saw milk, you remembered your sickness. Something was related. Or you were humiliated in a crowd, so now he moment you see a crowd, you close up and sense the past humiliation. There is fear, hesitation or something unnatural; you don't feel natural or comfortable. The reverse is true for some people. They always want to be in a crowd. They can't be in a room themselves. Many people can't be by themselves. They can't sit in a room by themselves because they are so used to being in the midst of noise and crowd. There are people who dislike silence. Silence is so boring to them. Ninety percent of the population have no longing for silence. They don't like silence; they like noise even when they are by themselves. That's why they have tape recorders and gadgets going full blast with music in the car or at home. As soon as the person wakes up, they turn on the radio, and this goes on till the night. Our impressions, identification or ideas about ourselves are the cause of our misery. You do not know what you are or who your are. You do not know your ability to like and dislike things. Many of you have experienced that during courses. All the buttons have been pushed! You thought you could not do this , or that. You thought you liked this and disliked that. You thought this is possible and that is not possible for you. Wisdom is not having any fixed idea about yourself in your mind, that you cannot do something. What are our identifications? First, we think we are a man or woman. You have been a man several times and you have been a woman several times. You have come into male and female bodies so many times. Male and females is in the body; in the nature of the body, but you think you are a male or you are a female. Immediately with that, a set of ideas follow through.

To be continued......
