What is Yoga?

Question - Gurudev, you have mentioned a few days back that wonder is the basis of Yoga. Could you please tell us what is Yoga? Gurudev Sri Sri - Yoga is uniting, uniting the small mind with the big mind. Bringing harmony between body, breath and mind. Mind and body are both there, but if the body and mind are not aligned then it is not Yoga. In Yoga you are bringing them in harmony, you are aligning them - breath, body and mind and you feel so good after that. You may just lift your hand unconsciously, but when you consciously move your hand, you see that there is a rhythm and there is dance to it. You see that there is a sense of well being. Similarly, when the small mind is united with the universal mind, that is called Yoga.

What are you doing Gurudev?

Question - Shared by someone who was with Gurudev one day, Gurudev was sitting by the riverside and I asked him, "What are you doing Gurudev?" Gurudev Sri Sri - "I’m waiting for the river to finish flowing so I can get across the river." To this I replied, "What are you saying Gurudev? If you wait for the river to finish flowing, you will just keep waiting and will never end up crossing the river, Gurudev". Gurudev said, "This is exactly what I have been trying to make you all understand. Those who always keep telling me that they will start their seva (selfless service), sadhana (meditation/spiritual practises), satsangs (sacred gathering) once their life's responsibilities are completed. Just as the river flow will never stop and we have to cross the river amidst it's flowing waters, likewise our life itself may end but our life's responsibilities will never end and amidst our busy work and responsible lives, we have to find our path of ...

How can the education system be reformed?

Question - Gurudev, if children are busy attending 6 hours of school, and then 4 more hours of tuition classes, how and when can they get the time to enhance their talents? How can the education system be reformed? Gurudev Sri Sri - I suggest you to make them regularly practice a little Pranayama and to meditate daily. They will not feel the need for tuition classes anymore. If you really have to, then one hour of tuitions is more than sufficient for them. To enhance their intelligence and skills, you also need to pay close attention to the kind of food they eat and their behaviour. Do not give children fried foods to eat right in the morning. Make them have lots of vegetables and fruits in their diet. Adopt Ayurvedic techniques and give them herbal medicines like :  1. Medh Rasayana (a nervine tonic for boosting memory and reducing mental stress) 2. Give them milk with Ojasvita (a milk powder made with combination of seven powerful and nutritious herbs). So encourage children to t...

What next, in the path of spirituality?

Question - Gurudev, I have very few desires, but what next, in the path of spirituality? Gurudev Sri Sri - In the path of spirituality, what is next is contentment. When you have contentment, you are not burning with some small desire. If at all you have a desire, you have a very big desire, like, I want everyone to be happy, I want the whole world to be peaceful. These are the desires you should have. Small desires should become bigger desires, and bigger desires don't bring you tension. Only small things bring you tension. There is a saying in Sanskrit, ‘Naalpe sukham asti yo vai bhumaa tat sukham’. The mind always goes for something that is bigger, some bigger joy, bigger bliss. It is its nature, you cannot avoid it. The mind wants to have something bigger, and spirituality gives you that bigger joy, bigger happiness. There is one kind of happiness that you get by taking, as children we all have it. However, a grown up person has happiness in giving, like a mother at home. She e...

Deep contentment.

Before going to bed, sit quietly all by yourself. There is a word in Sanskrit called 'ekant', which means finally I am all by myself. Otherwise your mind is always engaged with so much chattering and business all the time. When you are fed up with everything, chant 'Om Namah Shivaya', my goodness, let me let go of everything! This is called 'ekant'. It is said that when you are in that state, God comes chasing you, comes knocking behind you. Tonight before going to bed, drop everything and rest. Take a few minutes of deep contentment. ~~ HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Grace is that gratitude

Grace is that gratitude which can remain all the time. It is like the snow in the Himalayas that stays throughout the year. It doesn’t just fall and disappear.  Whatever falls on the highest peak stays. When there is gratitude, complaints disappear. When complaints arise, gratitude disappears, gratefulness disappears. When there is a complaint in the mind, there is discontent, frustration, dejections, depression. All that follows. If you are not grateful, then you will start complaining. You will find fault. Even if there is none, you will try to see it. You will find it. Your mind will do it for you. You won’t even need to try hard. Your mind can easily pick it up. This is the lower journey. Gratitude is the plateau, the middle. And as you rise above that, there is grace. ~ Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
