Goddess Lalitha – the Mother of the Universe!

Sri Lalitha Navarathri. Vasanta Navaratri or Chaitra Navaratri also known as Lalitha Navarathri is celebrated from Chaitra Amavasya for the next 9 nights.This year, it will be celebrated from 9th April 2024 to 18th April 2024. The main purpose of this Navaratri is to welcome the seasonal changes. The beginning of Winter (September-October) and beginning of Summer (April- May) mark important points of climatic and solar influences. Our bodies and minds also come under these influences. Therefore, Agni Purana recommends celebrating at least the Chaitra Navaratri and the Sharad Navaratri. Those persons are yogis, who before giving up the body are able to check the forces of desire and anger; and they alone are happy.

Some offer wealth, austerity, and yoga as sacrifice (yajna), yet others, with diligence and strict vows, offer knowledge acquired through scriptural study as sacrifice.

In that divine cosmic form, Arjuna beheld numerous mouths and eyes, possessing countless wondrous sights adorned with many celestial ornaments and wielding a multitude of uplifted divine weapons. Wearing heavenly garlands and garments anointed with divine fragrances, He revealed Himself as the all-wonderful, resplendent, and boundless one, having faces in all directions.

Those who are free from vanity and delusion, who have overcome the evil of attachment, who dwell constantly on the self (atman) and on God, who are free from the desire to enjoy the senses, and are beyond the dualities of pleasure and pain, such liberated personalities attain the supreme immortal state.

Always singing My divine glories, striving with great determination, and humbly bowing down before Me, they constantly worship Me in loving devotion.

I am not manifest to everyone, being veiled by My divine Yogmaya energy. Hence, those without knowledge do not know that I am without birth and changeless.

O descendant of Bharata! Know tamas to be born from ignorance, deluding all embodied beings, that binds firmly through negligence, laziness, and sleep.

Each sense has attachment and aversion for its corresponding sense objects, but one should not be under their control, for they are foes.

What is called renunciation, know that to be yoga, for no one can become a yogi without relinquishing desires.

I am the Lord, the inspirer of all, established in ecstasy and eternally situated in the form of yoga - he who knows this understands the essence of the Vedas.

तृतीया महती शक्तिर्निहन्ति सकलं जगत् । तामसी मे समाख्याता कालात्मा रुद्ररूपिणी ॥ ~ The Third great superpower of mine Destroys the whole creation. That Sakti of mine, headed by Tamasa, is Rudrarupini, of the form of Kala. ध्यानेन मां प्रपश्यन्ति केचिज्ज्ञानेन चापरे |अपरे भक्तियोगेन कर्मयोगेन चापरे ॥ ~ Some devotees attain Me by meditation, some by the gyanmarga, others by Bhakti-yoga or Karma-yoga. सर्वेषामेव भक्तानामेष प्रियतरो मम । यो विज्ञानेन मां नित्यमाराधयति नान्यथा ॥ ~ The most dear to me among all these types of devotees is the one who worships me regularly with the Gyana of self analysis.  अन्ये च ये त्रयो भक्ता मदाराधनकाङ्क्षिणः । तेऽपि मां प्राप्नुवन्त्येव नावर्तन्ते च वै पुनः । मया ततमिदं कृत्स्नमेतद्यो वेद सोऽमृतः ॥ ~ The other three types of devotees who are engaged in my worship, they also attain Me and they are also not reborn. I pervade all these- one who knows this attains immortality. पश्याम्यशेषमेवेदं वर्तमानं स्वभावतः । करोति काले भगवान् महायोगेश्वरः स्वयम् ॥ ~...

Within whom all this and all that is within, I am the omnipresent, omnipotent, the nurturer of all.

Chapters 3 : The Knowledge of Bhakti yoga  वक्ष्ये समाहितमनाः शृणुष्व शृणुष्व पवनात्मज ।येनेदं लभ्यते रूपं येनेदं सम्प्रवर्तते ॥ ~ Oh son of wind God! From whom this form is obtained and from which it becomes active, I'll tell about that, listen carefully. नाहं तपोभिर्विविधैर्न दानेन न चेज्यया । शक्यो हि पुरुषैर्ज्ञातुमृते भक्तिमनुत्तमाम् ॥ ~ People cannot know me by penance, charity or sacrifice except with perfect devotion. अहं हि सर्वभावानामन्तस्तिष्ठामि सर्वगः । मां सर्वसाक्षिणं लोका न जानन्ति प्लवङ्गम ॥ ~ O best monkey! I am omnipresent, situated within all beings, people cannot know me, the omniscient.  यस्यान्तरा सर्वमिदं यो हि सर्वान्तरः परः । सोऽहं धाता विधाता च लोकेऽस्मिन् विश्वतोमुखः ॥ ~ Within whom all this and all that is within, I am the omnipresent, omnipotent, the nurturer of all. न मां पश्यन्ति मुनयः सर्वेऽपि त्रिदिवौकसः । ब्राह्मणा मनवः शक्रा ये चान्ये प्रथितौजसः ॥ ~ Not even all the sages and devatas know me, and Brahmins, Manu, Indra and others do not even ...

It was I who established Parameshthi Brahma at the beginning of the universe and gave him all the Vedas that came out of my mouth.

ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या धार्मिका मामुपासते । तेषां ददामि तत्स्थानमानन्दं परमं पदम् ॥ ~ To those Brahmins, Kshatriyas and religious Vaishyas who worship Me, I confer the supreme position to them, which is Full of bliss. अन्येऽपि ये विकर्मस्थाः शूद्राद्या नीचजातयः । भक्तिमन्तः प्रमुच्यन्ते कालेन मयि सङ्गताः ॥ ~ If others, Shudras etc., engaged in minor works (lower castes), become a devotees of Mine, then they attain Me by Freeing themselves from the Wheel of time.  न मद्भक्ता विनश्यन्ते मद्भक्ता वीतकल्मषाः । आदावेतत्प्रतिज्ञातं मे न भक्त: प्रणश्यति ॥ ~ My flawless devotees never perish. अहमेव हि सर्वेषां योगिनां गुरुरव्ययः धार्मिकाणां च गोप्ताहं निहन्ता वेदविद्विषाम् ॥ ~ I am the eternal Guru of all Yogis. I protect the religious people and am the destroyer of the anti-Veda (evil). अहं वै सर्वसंसारान्मोचको योगिनामिह । संसारहेतुरवाहम सर्वसंसारवर्जितः ॥ ~ I free all yogis from the world. Inspite of Being the cause of this creation, I am beyond all creation. अहमेव हि संहर्ता स्रष्टाहं परिपालकः । मायावी मामिका शक्तिर्माया लोकविमोहिनी ॥ ~ I am the creator, maintainer and destroyer of this universe. I am Mayapati and my power Maya (Avidya) keeps deluding the whole world. ममैव च परा शक्तिर्या सा विद्येति गीयते । नाशयामि तया मायां योगिनां हृदि संस्थितः ॥ ~ My own parashakti is called Vidya. By this I destroy Maya (Avidya) by being situated in the mind of Yogis. अहं हि सर्वशक्तीनां प्रवर्तकनिवर्तकः । आधारभूतः सर्वासां निधानममृतस्य च ॥ ~ I am the originator and end of all saktis. I am that omnipresent, peaceful, knowledgeable soul, the Supreme Lord. The whole world is pervaded by me who has Avyakta form.

Chapter 2 : Philosophy of the upanishads पुना रामः प्रवचनमुवाच प्रधानं द्विजपुङ्गव । अव्यक्तादभवत्कालः पुरुषः परः ॥ ~ preaching again, Shri Ram said - O best dvija! From Me the Avyakta, emanates from Kaal and from it the the Pradhan tattva and the great Purusha. तेभ्यः सर्वमिदं जातं तस्मात्सर्वमहं जगत् । सर्वतः पाणिपाद तत्सर्वतोऽक्षिशिरोमुखम् ॥ ~ From him the whole creation has arisen. That's why I am the whole world. My hands and feet are everywhere, and my eyes, head and face are everywhere. सर्वतः श्रुतिमल्लोके समावृत्य तिष्ठति । सर्वेंद्रगुणाभासं सर्वेन्द्रियविवर्जितम्।। ~ The ears of that God are everywhere. He is situated, pervading all. He is the illuminator of all the senses and qualities but is beyond all the senses. सर्वाधारं स्थिरानन्दमव्यक्तं द्वैतवर्जितम् । सर्वोपमानरहितं प्रमाणातीतगोचरम् ॥ ~ He is the basis of all, stable, blissful, Avyakta and non-dual. I am that supreme God, omnipresent, peaceful and knowledgeable. There is nothing beyond me. Knowing me the Jeeva becomes free.

मत्स्थानि सर्वभूतानि यस्तं स वेदवित् । प्रधानं पुरुषं चैव वेद तत्त्वद्वयमुदाहृतम् ॥ ~ All living things are situated in me. He who knows this, is a Vedagya. Principal (Prakriti) and Purusha (Jivatma) - these are called two elements. तयोरनादिर्निर्दिष्ट: काल: त्रयमेतदनाद्यन्तमव्यक्ते संयोजकः परः । समवस्थितम् ॥ ~ The ultimate coordinator of both is said to be eternal. These three are beginningless and eternal elements, reside in the avyakt soul. तदात्मकं तदन्यत्स्यात्तद्रूपं मामकं विदुः । महदाद्यं विशेषान्तं सम्प्रसूतेऽखिलं जगत् ॥ ~ Even though it seems to be separate, know that the form which is different from Him, is mine. From the mahat-tattva to the pradhan, the whole world is created from him. या सा प्रकृतिरुद्दिष्टा मोहिनी सर्वदेहिनाम् । पुरुषः प्रकृतिस्थोऽपि भुङ्क्ते यः प्राकृतान् गुणान् ॥ ११ ॥ अहङ्कारविविक्तत्वात्प्रोच्यते आद्यो विकार: प्रकृतेर्महानात्मेति पञ्चविंशकः । कथ्यते ॥ ~ Nature is said to fascinate all the embodied beings.
