Matter has two aspects: name and form. Consciousness has three aspects: "is-ness" - that it is; knowingness/expression - it knows and expresses; and love - it is loving. A person who cannot surrender cannot be self-reliant either. If you don't have enough courage to surrender, then it is impossible for you to be self-reliant. You simply fool yourself. People who are afraid to surrender fool themselves. Because even a little fear is detrimental to self-reliance. If you don't have a hundred dollars, you cannot have a thousand dollars. Self-reliance contains surrender. Fifty dollars contains ten dollars. Question: Why does self-reliance need so much courage? When you want to depend on yourself for everything, there is nobody else, then it needs a lot of courage. If you are enjoying your suffering, then you also cannot be centered and you are far away from the path. What is the importance of silence. How should we practice it?

Question - Gurudev, what is the importance of silence. How should we practice it? Gurudev Sri Sri - Take a moment, observe your breath, calm your mind, and relax your body. You find such peace and so much love within you. We are all born with this gift of love and peace. Somehow we forget to look within, which is of utmost importance. A few moments to introspection is very necessary. Either eyes open or closed, being in the moment, now, and relaxing suddenly connects you to yourself.

The breath is so powerful. How does it work in connecting us to the subtle dimension?

Question - Gurudev, the breath is so powerful. How does it work in connecting us to the subtle dimension? Gurudev Sri Sri - In the subtle you are already connected. The breath only makes you realise that you are connected. Your mind is always outside and it does not come back to itself, so the breath is the first step in bringing the outgoing mind inward. It is the doorway or the pathway, and meditation keeps the mind in the inner chamber.

I have been very regular with my sadhana, seva and satsang for many years now. Despite this, I have been going through financial difficulties for the past three years and am very disturbed. Please advise.

Despite this, I have been going through financial difficulties for the past three years and am very disturbed. Please advise. Gurudev Sri Sri - Everything will be alright in time. There may be some delay but it will surely happen. These difficulties will not last for long. See, the entire country is going through financial trouble. Our industrialists have been facing various financial difficulties for many years now. Our growth rate has fallen from 12% to -2.5%. What else can you expect when this happens? There will be financial troubles everywhere, people will suffer losses in business, these things will happen. But all this is going to change very soon. Have faith and patience.

Why is attaining spirituality necessary?

Question - Gurudev, why is attaining spirituality necessary? Gurudev Sri Sri - It is because you want to be happy unconditionally, you want peace which does not get disturbed by small things. And this is quite natural. Wanting spirituality is as natural as wanting deep rest, as wanting to be loved, as wanting comfort and happiness. The definition of spirituality in Sanskrit is attaining greatest happiness, attaining greatest freedom (nirvana). It is natural. Like water flows down, and fire goes up, human beings want enlightenment.
