NAVRATRI

Weekly Knowledge 70 Mumbai 09 Oct 1996 India NAVRATRI Navratri means the nine nights and the new night. Creation happens in the darkness. In the womb of the mother and underneath the soil. Nine months in the womb are like nine long nights where the spirit takes human form. Night provides rest and rejuvenation. At night the entire creation goes to sleep including the ashram night watchman. (Laughter) People working come home at night and they really celebrate, rejoice and pray. Nine nights are precious as they have subtle energy. The subtle is enriched. There are 64 divine mother impulses which govern the subtle creation. These are responsible for restoring all earthly and spiritual benefits. They are simply part of one's awakened consciousness. These nine nights are celebrated to rekindle those divine impulses and celebrate the innermost depth of our lives. Jai Guru Dev Cleanse your body and cleanse your soul. Cleanse your body with water and your soul with knowledge and your spiri...

WHICH IS MORE EXPENSIVE

Weekly Knowledge 68 Bangalore Ashram 25 Sep 1996  India WHICH IS MORE EXPENSIVE - YOUR SMILE OR YOUR ANGER? Mahesh: Do you get angry? If so, how often? Guruji: I can but it's very expensive. Usually, you give your anger freely and smile rarely as though a smile is costly. In ignorance, anger is cheaper and a smile is costly. In Knowledge, a smile is free like sun, air, and water and anger is extremely expensive like a diamond. Conclusion: Make your Smile cheaper and anger expensive.

BALANCE AND DISCIPLINE

Weekly Knowledge 69 Bad Antogast 02 Oct 1996  Germany BALANCE AND DISCIPLINE People who are free, regret that they don't have discipline. They keep promising that they will become disciplined. People who are disciplined look for the end. (Discipline is not an end in itself, it is a means.) Look at the people who have no discipline; they are miserable. Freedom without discipline is absolute misery. Discipline without freedom is suffocating. Orderliness is monotonous and chaos is stressful. We have to make the discipline free and the freedom disciplined. People who are in company all the time, they look for the comforts of solitude. People who are in solitude, feel so lonely and want to be in company. People who are in a cold place want to be in a warm place. People who are in a warm place love something cool. This is the dilemma of life: Everyone is looking for perfect balance. Perfect balance is like a razor's edge. It can only be found in the self. There is no road to this tow...

First Visit To Ashram

This is about the first time I visited the Art Of Living Bangalore ashram; I had gone there to do the advance course in the year 2000. I had reached late the first day – the day before my course began, and so the accommodations were filling up fast. I got this ‘kutir’ (cottage) and till date I don’t know how many people we were there in that room. All the beds were already occupied and I just got this ‘gadda’ (mattress) placed down on the floor. I had such a big bag with me and so I just placed it there in front of my bed. My friend had also accompanied me on the trip. She got a ‘gadda’ next to mine and put her bag by her bed too. However she liked to sleep and come on time for the course, whereas I like to go before time for the course every day. Because when I do the course I want to sit at my teacher’s feet. So I needed to get up early to be there to get a place ahead. It was a 6 day advance course and there were over 1000 people from Maharashtra. The session would start at 6 o’cloc...

Ignorance?

Question - Gurudev, how can I be free of ignorance? Gurudev Sri Sri - When you become aware that you were ignorant, that itself means that your ignorance is gone. An ignorant person does not think of himself as ignorant at all. Just like how you realise you were asleep after you wake up, in the same way, an ignorant person realises his own ignorance only after he comes out of it. There is so much nectar in this knowledge. We can go on discussing it for hours together. Just remember that everything around you is a form of Vasudeva. Whatever kind of devotion one has, it has come to you by Vasudeva's grace alone.

My Mother’s Dream Fulfilled By Gurudev’s Grace

After my mother underwent a major gallbladder surgery, she repeatedly expressed her desire to attend an advance course at Gurudev’s ashram. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the distance between our home and the ashram in Bangalore, we were unable to find a suitable course for her. I sought help from many teachers, but to no avail. Eventually, we heard about a course in Mysore, but it was not conducted in Hindi, which was the only language my mother understood. Disappointed, we dropped the plan. During her visit to my home in Indore, my mother shared with me a dream she had of visiting Gurudev’s ashram. Her yearning only grew stronger. One evening, as my brother was booking their return tickets, I was scrolling through WhatsApp and came across a friend’s post about completing an advanced course at Omkareshwar ashram. Gurudev’s grace intervened, and I quickly obtained my friend’s contact information. My mother was enrolled in the course overnight, and volunteers even came to pic...

How to combine our inner journey and the outer world events?

Question - Gurudev, how to combine our inner journey and the outer world events? Gurudev Sri Sri - Inner journey and outer world events are complementary. If you are happy inside, you are able to work dynamically outside. The more dynamic you are, deeper and better is the rest and meditation. When you meditate the joy increases. People who are lazy, they cannot be happy and people who are dynamic, it is not necessary that they will be happy also. Dynamism should be combined with inner silence. So, time to time, one should take a few days off, learn how to go deep inside and meditate.

What is the significance of Mahashivratri?

Question - Gurudev, what is the significance of Mahashivratri? Gurudev Sri Sri - Mahashivratri means ‘the night of Shiva’ and is observed in honour of Lord Shiva (The meditative aspect of the universe). According to the legend from Shivapurana, when Shiva was asked by Parvathi what pleases him most, He is supposed to have replied thus : ‘The 14th night of the new moon, in the dark fortnight during the month of phalgun, is my most favorite day. It is known as Shivaratri. Shiva is the meditative aspect of the entire Universe. Shiva pervades the entire Universe. He is in every atom of the Universe. He has no form but is in every form, so full of compassion. Ling means symbol (chinha in Hindi) that is how it’s come to be used as in Striling, Pulling, (female and male gender) Chinha means that through which you can recognize the whole consciousness represented in the ling. In Tamil there is a saying “Anbe Shivan, Shivan Anbe” means Shiva is love and love is Shiva, the soul of the creation c...

Can you please guide me how to pray?

Question - Gurudev, can you please guide me how to pray? Gurudev Sri Sri - Prayer is a spontaneous thing. It happens on two occasions, when you are very grateful, and you are expressing your gratitude. And when you are totally helpless, and you beg for help. Prayer just happens, you cannot cultivate it. At the most what you can do is, look back at your own life and see where you were and how you have moved. Alternatively, look at other people's lives and see how many people on this planet are miserable, and how fortunate you are. This gentle awareness will make you prayerful or thankful. Prayer is the beginning, and meditation is its culmination. Prayer is thanking God for all that is given, and meditation is to be there, ready to listen to what God is saying. Meditation is a matured form of prayer.

When taking risk is so essential to be successful, how does one feel secure in life?

Question - Gurudev, when taking risk is so essential to be successful, how does one feel secure in life? Gurudev Sri Sri - Confidence, and you get confidence by going deep within. A few minutes of meditation will give you that confidence. Look back at your own life and see, you have had many incidences where you were anxious of how you would be able to overcome a particular situation, and you were able to cross them all quite successfully. If you look at your past, every incident has made you strong. The bad incidents have somewhere contributed to your inner strength. And the good incidences have given you more confidence in your ability and in your creativity. So we simply have to make use of situations, good or bad for our growth, and I tell you, it is for our growth.

Lying

Paramaribo, Surinam, 14th January 1998 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 38 - Lying A dear person whom you trust lies to you and gets caught. What do you feel? Feel cheated, sad, angry, disappointed, compassionate, disillusioned, wonder, shock, embarrassment, loss of respect?  Recently when someone lied to me, I felt happy and more love, for He was not a good liar. Had He been a good liar, He would not have been caught. He was so innocent that he could not even lie properly.  If He had not been caught, how would you know He was a liar? So you see, you can never know a good liar. The person you call a liar is not a good liar, He is innocent.  So when someone lies to you, there is no need to go through all the above listed mental gymnastics. Instead just melt and dissolve in love. Ref Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji Celebrating Silence

Politics

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India 5th December, 1996 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 37 - Politics Do not let politics sway you away from the path. If you are afraid of politics you cannot be successful in the spiritual realm. You have to cross the barricade of politics. It is a test of your strength, your commitment and your focus. You cannot avoid politics, whether to harbour politics in your mind is your choice.  There was politics among the twelve apostles and also around Buddha. Krishna was in politics from head to toe. And you say you do not want politics? The greater your aversion, the more you will harbor it in your consciousness. When you recognise politics in any group, it is a blessing for you to be centred and to go inward.  You can do that without blaming the group, without running away from people, without giving up. It can enhance your skill to act while being unattached. There are many advantages to becoming involved in politics. Politics amplify...

Rudeness

Montreal Ashram, Quebec, Canada 27th June, 2000 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 36 - Rudeness What do you do when someone is rude to you? 1. Get upset. 2. React rudely. 3. Become frustrated. 4. Run away from the person or avoid the situation in the future. 5. Blame the person. 6. Preach to the person. None of these will in any way strengthen you. What are the options? See someone’s rude behavior in this light : 1. Rudeness indicates the intensity of their commitment. 2. It indicates their level of stress and insensitivity. It attests to the upbringing of the person. 3. It indicates a behavioral pattern. 4. It shows a lack of knowledge. 5. It shows a lack of insight into their own mind and its sensations. 6. It shows you behaviour to avoid. 7. It is an opportunity for you to welcome and absorb the rudeness. 8. It strengthens your mind. It reveals the love that you are as unconditional.  The next time someone is rude to you, make sure you do not get upset. Just return...

Humiliation

European Ashram, Bad Antogast, Germany, 4th August, 1999 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 35 - Humiliation Know that humiliation does not weaken you, it strengthens you. When you have a sense of belongingness, you cannot feel humiliated. The more egotistic you are, the more humiliation you feel. When you are childlike and have a greater sense of kinship, you do not feel humiliated. Similarly when you are committed to truth and not to your ego, you do not feel humiliated. If you are afraid of humiliation, you can make progress in neither your material life nor in your spiritual life. When you stand above humiliation, you get closer to the self to God. When you are steeped in love, with existence, with the divine, nothing whatsoever can humiliate you. So the way out of humiliation is to get humiliated, be childlike, be crazy, get steeped in love with the divine, totally commit to truth, to knowledge. Jealousy

London, United Kingdom, 1st November 1995 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 34 - Jealousy There are many ways to conquer the jealousy or envy that may arise in you : 1. That the person of whom you are jealous or envious has done some good deeds in the past and is now reaping the fruit. 2. See jealousy or envy as an inspiration to gain merit for yourself. 3. Create a sense of belongingness with those of whom you are envious. See them as a part of you. 4. Think of all you have that they do not have and feel grateful. 5. Simply observe the sensations. Join hands and form a team with them. 6. Realise that in the current of moving time all will perish. Go and ask them, “Are you happy?” Question - What if they say, “Yes”? If the answer is “Yes” then they must be in the Art of Living. And how do you handle jealousy in others? Gurudev -  1. Think of everyone who is jealous of you for what you have and see that what they envy has not brought you joy. 2. Praise them with superl...

Our mind has two choices

Our mind has two choices. One, it can become like a photograph. You click a photograph and the photo stays in it. As long as this happens, you’ll keep dealing with your karmas. Another is, you being like a mirror. In the mirror also you see the picture. But the moment you move, the picture disappears from it. The mirror doesn't stick to the picture, while a photograph sticks. So the whole journey is from being a photograph to becoming a mirror. Got it?

Shivaratri is the day of Lord Shiva

Shivaratri is the day of Lord Shiva. Shiva is the lord of meditation and, therefore, the lord of awakening. Shiva is called Mahakala — grand time. Shivam also means innocent. Shiva is a very simple Lord, but in this simplicity there is a deep message. Shiva, in his Nataraja form, symbolises the union of nature and the Divine. Natraja holds fire in one hand, representing the fire element. A damru (conical musical instrument) in the other hand depicts the space element. Shiva’s hair is open and flying, representing the air element. One foot on the ground symbolises prithvi (earth element), another in the air. One hand is the symbolic abhaya hasta offering protection and the other points to his feet symbolising surrender. With one foot already in the air, he has already taken a step towards the devotee. He says, “You are dear to me” even before beginning. Shiva is dancing. Life should be like this. If both feet are stuck in the ground, then you cannot dance. Even to walk, you need to take...
