The Power Of Love: Meeting Gurudev

When I first met Gurudev, I saw him on stage at an advanced course I was attending. Though I couldn’t quite fathom who or what he was, I admired the wisdom of his words and his humor and was filled with gratitude for the practices and knowledge with which he had transformed my life. I saw him as a wise and wonderful man. Later that evening, he did “darshan,” i.e going around to every person and handing them a little bag of nuts. When he came around to me to give me a little bag of nuts, he looked in my eyes, it must have been for half a second. I stood transfixed. I felt such a wave of love coming from him that I quite nearly fell over. In that split second, which seemed like an hour due to its power, I realised why people say that “love conquers all” and that love is the most powerful thing in the world. In that moment, I realised that these sayings were all true. And that a being so full of love is capable of transforming the whole world because what everyone wants is love. I felt in...

The Botheration Box

During a basic course on Sudarshan Kriya, my teacher introduced us to the concept of the “botheration box” and how it can help us let go of worries and anxieties. However, I had doubts about the effectiveness of this method. On the last day of the course, one of the participants lost their car keys and we all started searching for them. After 30 minutes of searching, I remembered the botheration box and suggested to my teacher that we put the issue in it. She closed her eyes and at that moment, we heard a sound and thought that the keys had been found. This experience taught me the power of surrendering to Gurudev’s teachings. As he says, “fear cannot live with faith. Without faith, there is no surrender. Without surrender, it is not possible to feel divinity.” By surrendering our worries and doubts to Gurudev, we can find inner peace and trust in the path ahead. The Botheration Box - Sri Sri Stories

Finding Clarity In Confusion With Guruji’s Guidance

As a seeker of both spirituality and worldly success, my journey has been a mixed bag of confusion and clarity. I’ve tried various paths, sometimes moving forward with triple speed, and sometimes getting nowhere. However, through it all, Guruji has been a constant source of guidance and support. From the beginning of my spiritual journey, Guruji and Sudarshan Kriya helped me build a strong foundation in rationality, which kept me grounded and composed during times of upheaval. Whether I needed to let go of worries or seek consistent blessings, Guruji was always there. Understanding that there is more to life than the usual conundrums we face has been a vital aspect of my spiritual journey, and Guruji has been instrumental in helping me reach that understanding. Recently, I had the opportunity to interact with Guruji during a college-organized webinar. I had many burning questions about finding purpose in a consumerist world, and Guruji provided answers to them all. He emphasized the im...

Quitting Smoking With The Help Of Gurudev

I picked up the bad habit of smoking during my university days. While I enjoyed it for a few years, later it became a troublesome and sticky habit that was taking a toll on my body and mind. I used to cough severely during and after Sudarshan Kriya. I tried all means to quit, but failed every time. One day, I watched a video of Gurudev where he mentioned two important points: first, a bad habit is something that you regret doing, and if you don’t do it, you feel unhappy; and secondly, one can quit smoking by pledging not to smoke for some interval of time initially. These two thoughts were planted in my head, and I decided to at least not smoke on Thursdays, as it is Guruwar. I was successful, but I couldn’t quit, and the first thing I used to do on Friday mornings was to smoke. After 12 years of smoking, I felt tired of this habit and was losing myself to it. It was my 30th birthday, and I turned up at the Bangalore Ashram without much planning. Coincidentally, Gurudev happened to be ...

A Memorable Experience At The Bangalore Ashram

I recently completed my first Advanced Course at the Bangalore Ashram, and it was also my first time visiting the ashram. For years, I had heard about various experiences from a mentor, and I always hoped that I would witness them myself one day. Fortunately, Gurudev designed the course in such a way that it gave us plenty of time for nature walks, which is something most participants cannot experience in the concrete jungles they come from. I was completely mesmerized by the beauty of the ashram. The fact that it is so well managed without a manager in sight is something that no one back home will believe me when I tell them about how neat, clean, and well-organized everything is. I often wondered who was managing all of this, how come there were hardly any flies, how come it was so big, green, and clean? Of course, there is an admin team working behind the scenes, but it appears everything is happening on auto mode. During one of our breaks, I went to the waterfall behind the Panchak...

A Serendipitous Meeting With Gurudev

In November 2003, I was busy preparing for the GRE and planning to apply for universities in the USA. When I learned about Gurudev’s visit to Calcutta, I hesitated to attend the event as I didn’t want to lose valuable study time. Nevertheless, I decided to go and reached the school where the event was being held. As I waited outside, I saw Gurudev walking gracefully in his white robes, surrounded by volunteers. Despite the presence of volunteers forming a wall to prevent devotees from rushing towards him, one person prayed for Gurudev to look at her, and he turned towards her with a smile. After only five minutes, Gurudev left, and I assumed that was the end of my brief encounter with him. However, as I saw other devotees rushing outside the school towards an open ground, I decided to join them. I was surprised to see a huge crowd gathered in the open ground with Gurudev standing on a stage. It was a serendipitous meeting, and I felt grateful for the unexpected opportunity to see Gurud...

A Profound Experience With Gurudev

When I first saw Gurudev in 1994, I had already been practicing Sudarshan Kriya for a few years. I was then following the guidance of another guru. While I greatly benefited from the techniques taught by my previous guru, he was very distant and did not form personal relationships. I saw that many of my previous guru’s former teachers were with Gurudev, and I knew there had to be something very special about him. However, I was shocked when I experienced nothing in his presence during my first encounter. But I continued to do my yoga and Sudarshan Kriya every day. Two years later, Gurudev came back and I went into a room where he was sitting on a yellow silk shawl. It’s difficult to describe, but as soon as I saw him, I was overwhelmed and saw him as “Infinity,” radiating sweet bliss and profound knowledge. In awe, I laughed and wondered how the universe could be contained in one man. As if hearing my thoughts, Gurudev laughed and looked right at me. At that moment, Infinity expanded e...

A Transformative Experience With Gurudev

After attending the Basic Course, I had a deep and loving experience, and hearing the stories of Gurudev made me very happy. I decided to purchase a photo of him, but felt it was a bit costly. Nevertheless, I brought it home and read the books that I received as a gift. After reading the books, I felt completely blissful. I went to bed and woke up the next morning around 5:30 am to do my kriya practice. As I walked towards my room, I noticed a 50 rupee note lying in front of it. I felt happy and shared this experience with my AOL friends. At that time, I thought of Gurudev as a good human being and a world reformer, but whenever I heard that he was God, I felt uncomfortable. As I continued to gaze at his photo and read his teachings, I began to realize that I didn’t need anyone in my life other than Gurudev. The first time I had a deep gaze at his photo was an unforgettable moment. Since then, Gurudev has been with me every step of the way, guiding me in all the decisions I make. I am ...

A Chance Encounter With Gurudev’s Care

In 2005, I lived in Bangalore and had done the basic course with Gurudev in 2003, but I never believed in him. I was going through personal problems, and my life wasn’t going well. One day, I decided to go for a bike ride to the outskirts of the city. I found myself near the ashram with a big photograph of Gurudev welcoming me. I went inside the ashram and was amazed by the ambiance. It was Navaratri, and around 500 people from all over the world were there. I sat at the lawn in front of the Vishalakshi mandap and felt hungry at around 3 PM because I hadn’t eaten since morning. I knew there would be prasad somewhere because it was Navaratri. But I was desperate for a sign that Gurudev was a real master. So, I made a promise to myself that I would only eat if someone came and asked me to eat. In the next 30 seconds, something incredible happened. A chappal stand was a few feet away, and a gentleman (now a swami) came up to me and asked if I had eaten the prasad. I smiled and said no. He...

Gurudev Remembered My Dream

Since childhood, I had always dreamt of getting into IIM Ahmedabad, but my attempts to clear the entrance exam had been unsuccessful. Over time, I let go of that desire and moved on with my life. However, 10 years later, Gurudev remembered that dream and provided me with hope and a chance to pursue it. With Gurudev’s grace, I was able to achieve a good GMAT score, which allowed me to apply to the top 5 business schools in India. Although all of my interviews went well, the one at IIMA was particularly challenging. I left the interview feeling hopeless after the interviewer criticized my ability to argue. I thought that perhaps Gurudev had something else in mind for me. A few months later, the results were released and I had been accepted into all of the business schools, including IIM Ahmedabad. This experience taught me that when Gurudev chooses something for us, it will happen despite what the world may think or say. Gurudev remembers our smallest desires and has the power to make th...

The Transformative Power Of The Art Of Living

On August 15th, 2012, I joined The Art of Living in Ranchi, Jharkhand. The six-day YES!+ course changed my life entirely, and I credit my success and personal growth to the organization. Since my childhood, I had been a brilliant student who was passionate about serving society. In my first year of college, I had the opportunity to participate in the YES!+ course, which opened my eyes to new possibilities. After completing the course, I became involved in a seva project called “Say YES to life and NO to suicide,” which was a much-needed service for youth struggling with their emotions. At first, I hesitated to interact with strangers, but I eventually opened up and enjoyed the seva. I attended follow-ups, interacted with volunteers and teachers, and participated in Satsang’s and intro talks, learning from others’ mistakes and my own. Over time, I became more involved in the organization. I gave intro talks, organized courses, took care of expenses, courses, and teachers’ needs, and man...

Judge for yourself . . . !

Weekly Knowledge 55 Canadian Ashram 26 Jun 1996  Canada JUDGEMENTS AND GOOD COMPANY Though you have heard "don't judge," judgement comes unavoidably in day-to-day life. By the actions and behaviors of people, you either approve or disapprove. But always remember that everything is changing, and do not hold onto the judgement. Otherwise your judgement gets solidified like a rock. It brings misery for you and for others. If judgements are lighter like air, like a breeze, they bring in fragrance, then move away. They could bring a foul smell, then move away. They should not stay there forever. Judgements are so subtle that you are not even aware of their existence. Judging or labeling someone as judgmental is also a judgement. Only in the state of Being when you are full of love and compassion can you ever be free from all judgements. Yet the world cannot move without judgements. Until you judge something as good or bad, you cannot do any actions. If you see rotten apples in...

Obsession for money

Obsession for money, attachment to progeny, craving fame, and paranoia about longevity can grip the mind, draining energy. The first step is recognizing what is affecting you. Spiritual wisdom and meditation help you rise above these effortlessly. ~ Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji

JOYFUL

Weekly Knowledge 54 Somewhere in Beautiful British Columbia 19 Jun 1996  Canada WHEN WE ARE JOYFUL  When we are joyful, we don't look for perfection. If you are looking for perfection then you are not at the source of joy. Joy is the realization that there is no vacation from wisdom. The world appears imperfect on the surface but underneath, all is perfect. Perfection hides; imperfection shows off.  The wise will not stay on the surface but will probe into the depth. Things are not blurred; your vision is blurred. Infinite actions prevail in the wholeness of consciousness. And yet the consciousness remains perfect, untouched. As Satsangees, realize this now and be at Home.  Koan (riddle) of the week: You better straighten out and become we. We are always one and you could be two. RESPONSIBILITY

Weekly Knowledge 57 San Jose, California 11 Jul 1996  USA SURRENDER AND RESPONSIBILITY Setting up a time-bound goal gives direction to the life force. Imagination is essential for this. Most people have a small imagination and are stuck with that, and that causes frustration. But if you are a devotee, you say "Let Thy Will be done" and then you will step lightly to the goal. You will take it easy. We have to make a distinction. Some people say "Let God do everything and surrender" and others say "I have to be responsible." Surrender is saying "Let Thy Will be done" and "Thy Will" for you is to take responsibility for the whole world. It appears to be opposing and conflicting in nature -- in fact they are two sides of the same coin. The more you surrender, the more responsive you become. One who is irresponsible cannot surrender either. Why is someone irresponsible? They are lazy or fearful or both. If you are lazy or fearful, you cannot...

BUSINESSMAN

Weekly Knowledge 56 Canadian Ashram 03 Jul 1996  Canada GOD IS A THOROUGH BUSINESSMAN The Divine has given you all the small pleasures in the world, but has kept the bliss to Himself. To get the highest bliss you have to go to Him and Him alone. Don't be too smart with the Divine and try to fool Him. Most of your prayers and rituals are just attempts to trick the Divine. You try to give the least and get the maximum out of the Divine and He knows. He's an astute businessman; He will trick you even more. If you go underneath the carpet, He will go underneath the floor. Be sincere in your attempts. Do not try to outsmart the Divine. Once you get the bliss, then everything else is joyful. Who loves us totally

We must have this deep faith that there is someone who loves us totally and will take care of everything for us. If you have experienced this feeling even once, you will simply walk ahead in life with your head held high, and full enthusiasm. You will walk regally like a lion and not like some small insect. You will not cry over your problems thinking ‘Oh, I do not have this, I do not have that’. You will find that everything you desire will simply fall at your feet.  ~ Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar Ji

That faith has great value

“A few years ago when I was staying on the 14th floor in Hawaii, I looked outside my window. It was pitch dark but there were so many lights shimmering in the city of Honolulu. The thought came that these city lights were fighting with the darkness of the new moon. But, they could not vanquish the night; the night was so deep and dark. On the other side, it also seemed like the night is giving a chance to all these millions of lights to shine. It is the night which is enabling the stars to exhibit their glory. One way to look at it was that the lights are fighting the night and from another angle the night was glorifying the lights. Similarly, in life, any situation can be viewed from two points. The wise way is to see how adverse situations glorify your qualities and bring out your beautiful qualities. You cannot fully exhibit your goodness in a very pleasant atmosphere. Goodness does have value when things are good, but it shines forth prominently in situations when things are not so...

If you don't make use of your talents, they will not be given to you again.

Weekly Knowledge 59 Bad Antogast 24 Jul 1996  Germany DOING VERSUS HAPPENING Only one who is 100 percent in doing can recognize the happening. The healthiest way to apply this knowledge is to see the whole past as happening and the present as doing. If you see the past as doing, then ego and regret come along. And when you see the present as happening, then laziness and unawareness set in. If you apply the doing for the future, it brings tension and worry. If you apply the happening for the future, it might bring some confidence and also lethargy. Let the happening be for the past. Let the doing be for the present. And the future is a mix of both. The wise will see the doing in happening and the happening in doing simultaneously. Are you confused now? (Laughter) One who does a lot of work will never say he did a lot. When someone says he did a lot of work, that means he can do more. He has not done enough. Work does not tire you as much as the doership does. All the talents you hav...

When you go beyond gratefulness, then union happens

Weekly Knowledge 60 Bad Antogast 31 Jul 1996  Germany Today is a gift from God -- that is why it is called "present!" DON'T BE GRATEFUL!  Warning! Watch out! This Knowledge Sheet contains explosives! It can explode your head or your heart. If it explodes your heart -- nothing is left! If it explodes your head -- everything is attained!  Guruji: How many of you are grateful here? (Everybody raises their hand.) If you are grateful, you don't belong to Me! (Everyone is shocked.) You are not part of the Master. When someone gives you something, you are grateful. That means you feel separate. You are not grateful to yourself.  Gratefulness is inevitable. When you go beyond gratefulness, then union happens. No "I," no "you" remains. You are part of the Master. You are just One Being with a thousand heads and a thousand arms, but with one heart. You have got to be grateful on the path, but you have to transcend gratefulness. Better stop being grateful. INFINITE PATIENCE

Weekly Knowledge 62 Santa Monica, California 14 Aug 1996  USA INFINITE PATIENCE AND SMART SHOPPING Suppose you go to God, get a boon, and walk away. When your intention is to get a boon, then you are in a hurry. Another person who knows he owns God is not in a hurry for anything. Infinite patience comes up in him. When you know you own God, you are not in a hurry to get something out of God. Your hurry to get something throws you off balance and makes you small. Have "eternal wait," infinite patience. When you have infinite patience, you will realize God belongs to you. Either through awareness or through practice you reach the same spot. Question: What do you mean by "owning God?" Answer: The Divinity belongs to you. It's not like shopping at the supermarket in a hurry and rushing back home. When you see the whole store is at home, you are not in a hurry to shop. You are at ease. Question: To develop patience do we just observe the impatience? Answer: Just obse...
