Sorrow (Continued)

New Delhi, India, 28th November, 1996 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 27 - Sorrow (Continued) If you are unhappy, check if any of these are lacking - tapas, or penance, vairagya, or dispassion, sharanagati, or surrender. Tapas is agreeing with the moment, a total acceptance of pleasant or unpleasant situations. Vairagya means “I want nothing” and “I am nothing”. Sharanagati is "I am here for you, for your joy”. If you are grumbling, it is because these are lacking in your life. When you accept your situation you cannot grumble, when you take it as tapas you will not grumble. When you come from a state of dispassion - “I do not want anything”, you do not grumble, and if you are surrendered you will have no complaints. If you do not do it willingly, you will do it later out of desperation.  First you will say, “Nothing can be done”. Then in anger and desperation you will say, “I give up, I want nothing, I have no choice, to hell with it”. All 3 of these - penance, di...

Misery (Continued)

Bangalore Ashram, India, 27th November, 1997 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 25 - Misery (Continued) Your attraction or craving can exist only as long as you think someone is “other”. When you think they are a part of you or your self, then the attraction dies out. That is why a husband or a wife may not be attracted to their partner but to someone else, because their partner has already become a part of them.  When you realise everyone is part of your self, you enjoy the whole world without a sense of craving. When ashaucha happens, quickly come back to shaucha. Suppose you feel drowned in any worldly event, just know this is ashaucha - “That is why I am miserable”. Then come back to shaucha.  Your practices, meditation, Sudarshan Kriya, service, and Satsang will all help you. When you share your misery, it does not reduce. When you do not share your joy, it reduces. Share your problems only with the Divine, not with anyone else, as that will only increase the...

Sorrow

Bangalore Ashram, India, 4th May, 2000 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 26 - Sorrow The only thing you must remember is how fortunate you are. When you forget this, you become sad. Sorrow indicates your attachment to your negative qualities as well as your attachment to your positive qualities. Your negative qualities make you sad. And when you think you are so great, you start blaming others, this also makes you become sad.  The purpose of sorrow is to bring you back to the self and the self is all joy but this realisation is possible only through knowledge - through awareness. Knowledge or awareness leads sorrow towards the self. Without knowledge, the same sorrow multiplies and does not get completed. Knowledge completes sorrow. Only with the power of knowledge do you transcend sorrow.  If on this path you have everything. You have this beautiful knowledge that has all flavours - wisdom, laughter, seva, silence, singing, dancing humour, celebrating, yagyas, c...

Death

Indore, India, 26th November, 1999 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 23 - Death Death brings you in touch with the reality of life. Death creates a vacuum, a void and this void is fertile ground for the spirit to manifest. All talents, inventions and creativity spring forth from the void, creation has a tendency to return to the void. All places of worship in all religions are connected with places of burial or cremation because only the awareness of death can bring dispassion and can ground you in knowledge. According to Indian mythology, Shiva abides in both Mount Kailasa and in Smashana. Kailasa means 'Where there is only celebration' there is the cremation ground - 'Where there is only void'. Divinity dwells in the void as well as in celebration. In you there is void, in you there is celebration. The realisation that life is very short brings dynamism in your life.  Unwanted things will fall off as well as distractions. When you have to act or put out ...

Misery

Santa Barbara, California, United States 28th April, 1999 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 24 - Misery Memory make you miserable or wise. Memory of experiences and events in the ever changing world, however good or bad constrict the vastness of the self. They bind you. Memory of your nature, the non-changing self, expands and elevates awareness.  This liberates you. You are what you are because of your memory. If you are ignorant, it is because of your memory. If you are enlightened, it is because of your memory. Forgetfulness of the infinite is misery. Forgetfulness of the trivial is ecstasy. Question - How do we get rid of unpleasant memories and limitations? Gurudev - Know the impermanent nature of the world and events. Realise that past events do not exist in the present. Accept the past and drop it. Be dispassionate and centred. Memory of the self is gained in the company and service of the Enlightened. “So Hum” increase prana or “So What?”, if nothing works, go...

Violence

Vanprastha Ashram, Rishikesh, 9th March, 2000 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 21 - Violence Violence comes with noise while nonviolence happens in silence. People who are violent make tremendous noise, they make their violence known, while people who are nonviolent are quiet. But the time has come for the nonviolent ones to make noise so that violence will quite down.  The message of nonviolence must come loud and clear so that it can be heard at a young age. A sense of shame has to be connected with anger and violence. The reason for violence in young people is a sense of pride in anger and violence, not a sense of shame.  People feel proud that they are violent or angry. They think it is prestigious or a status symbol to be aggressive. Aggression is not considered a quality to be ashamed of. This promotes aggression and violence in the whole society, and when aggression and violence are promoted, human values diminish. Some movies and modern music glorify fru...

Depression

Bangalore Ashram, India, 6th October, 1999 Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 22 - Depression Lack of idealism is the main cause of depression among young people today. Life appears to be so meaningless to these children, who are either too scared of the competitive world or bogged down by heavy stimuli. They need inspiration, and spirituality is that inspiration that can keep the spirit up.  Depression sets in if there is a lack of zeal to fight. Aggression is the antidote to depression. Depression is lack of energy, anger and aggression are bolts of energy. When Arjuna was depressed, Krishna inspired him to fight and thus reinstated life back into him. If you are depressed, do not take Prozac - just fight for any cause. If aggression crosses a certain limit, it leads you back into depression. That is what happened when King Ashoka won the Kalinga War - he became depressed. He had to take refuge in Buddha. Wise are those who do not fall either into aggression or depre...

Aggression

4th July 1995, Ottawa, Canada Chapter 1 - The You That You Want To Change Day 20 - Aggression Often people are soft from lack of courage and forcefulness. They suffer a lot, and at some time or other they become volatile. Yet there are some people who possess a softness that comes from maturity, magnanimity, and the knowledge of the self. There are also 2 types of forcefulness in people, aggressive and assertive. Aggressive people are forceful out of weakness or out of fear. Assertive people are forceful out of care, love, and compassion. So look into yourself and become aware of what type of softness and what type of forcefulness is in you. Aggression and assertiveness overshadow intuition.  Often people who are sensitive tend to become aggressive, in order to avoid being hurt and in this process, they lose sight of their fine intuition. Fine intuition needs sensitivity, but sensitivity is often painful. In order to avoid pain they become aggressive and assertive, and in turn they...

My parents are old and still have arguments and fights after being married for 50+ years. Will they ever change?

Question - Gurudev, my parents are old and still have arguments and fights after being married for 50+ years. Will they ever change? Gurudev Sri Sri - Come on, they are having fun in their life, why do you want to stop it? Without arguments and fights life will be so boring; no spice. They enjoy a spicy dinner, let them have it. Why you want to make it bland? If it gets too hot, pour a little ghee, put some butter in between. It happens, what to do? Someone asked a gentlemen, 'Why do you fight with your wife so much?' He said, 'What do you mean? I love her, so I fight with her. Who else do I fight with' and that is correct. Sometimes it happens.

Some people think one has to master the yamas and niyamas (The yamas and nivamas five behaviors to avoid and five to engage constitute the first two limbs) before one can practice the other 6 limbs out of the 8 limbs of Yoga as propounded in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. What is your take on this?

Question - Gurudev, some people think one has to master the yamas and niyamas (The yamas and nivamas five behaviors to avoid and five to engage constitute the first two limbs) before one can practice the other 6 limbs out of the 8 limbs of Yoga as propounded in Patanjali Yoga Sutras. What is your take on this? Gurudev Sri Sri - The limbs are not sequential, they are all together. The practice of the others contributes to the ability to observe the yamas and niyamas. When we teach meditation in prisons, we see that the moment they have a taste of meditation, their whole thought process and behavior pattern changes. They start on the path of non-violence. They become very truthful, and the tendencies to cheat disappear. So the yamas and niyamas start happening in people's lives just when they begin meditation. Yoga would be incomplete if even one limb is absent from it. All the eight limbs coexist. Our program is the same way. We do some asana, and some pranayama-breathing exercises-...

I experience some intense vibrations especially when I am in bliss. Can you please talk about different levels of layers of energy in our body?

Question - Gurudev, I experience some intense vibrations especially when I am in bliss. Can you please talk about different levels of layers of energy in our body? Gurudev Sri Sri - This entire universe is nothing but vibrations. It is all made up of waves, vibrations, and energy. When your vibrations do not match with the vibrations of others you call it negative, and when your vibrations match with other vibrations, it is harmonious and you call it bliss. When your energy becomes such that it becomes universal, then whatever the outer circumstances may be, you remain oblivious to it. We went to Machu Pichu in South America, in Peru, and the people asked me, 'How do you feel the vibrations here? 'I said, 'I do not feel anything', this is because wherever we go we create our own vibrations. So I do not say, 'Oh, this is negative and that is not. Of course, when people are agitating, upset or sad, it definitely creates negative vibrations around you, no doubt. But re...

I need your guidance. I am a mother and a wife, and I run a small school. There are times when things go wrong entirely, and I can't concentrate or be myself at my workplace. How do I manage that?

Question - Gurudev, I need your guidance. I am a mother and a wife, and I run a small school. There are times when things go wrong entirely, and I can't concentrate or be myself at my workplace. How do I manage that? Gurudev Sri Sri - It is okay if it is only sometimes. But if it is often then we need to attend to it. First of all, know that as an individual, you have the capacity to multi task. If you think, 'Oh, I am a mother, I cannot be good at the office. It is not possible for me', or, 'I am an office goer, so I am not doing justice to my children', these sorts of conflicts weighs very heavy on your emotions and your mind. First you should know that you have the capacity to be a mother, a good wife, and a good officer or a good businesswomen. Resolve the conflict right at the root, instilling confidence in your capabilities. The second is that, it is the quality of time and not the quantity of time that is important in whatever you are doing. You don't hav...

How do the planets have an influence on our health?

Question - Gurudev, how do the planets have an influence on our health? Gurudev Sri Sri - The macrocosm and microcosm have a big connection. Each planet is aligned with a particular grain, color, shape, bird and animal. All these are connected; it is also connected to a particular part of the body. Even your fingers. Do you know, every finger is connected to a particular planet? It is an amazing science of the uniting of the macrocosm and microcosm. For example, the planet Mars is connected to the liver and pitta, and pitta is connected with channa daal (chick peas, humus). If you eat too much chick peas, you will find your pitta increasing. So, pitta, chick peas, Mars, they are all connected. There is something called Medical Astrology, where you can see in a chart, what type of diseases you could get or be prone to. This could also be seen from a chart, astrologically. Astrology is an amazing science but astrologers have not studied it properly. I have my own reservations about astro...

I give generously to my loved ones. But often I find myself taking care of others, before taking care of myself, and then I have regret and resentment. How do I give in a healthier way?

Question - Gurudev, I give generously to my loved ones. But often I find myself taking care of others, before taking care of myself, and then I have regret and resentment. How do I give in a healthier way? Gurudev Sri Sri - Listen, you seem to have too much free time. Why you think so much? You want to give, then give and forget about it. There is a saying in Hindi, 'Neki kar aur dariya mein daal', which means, do good deeds and then drop them in the ocean. Don't care about them. If you think, 'I have done, I have done, what have you done? You cannot give anything to anyone that is not due to them. It is impossible. Even if you want to give, and it is not time for that person to take it, he will not be able to take it. So you give, and then forget about it. Just be spontaneous, you don't have to think too much about it. There is no need to feel guilty when you have a need, just go buy it. That is it. You cannot satisfy everybody's desires all the time, but whate...

We have heard that you have a 20 hour day, where do you get the drive and the inspiration from?

Question - Gurudev, we have heard that you have a 20 hour day, where do you get the drive and the inspiration from? Gurudev Sri Sri - When you want to do some work, energy is there. There is an old saying, 'Where there is a will there is a way. One thing I always believed in was that, never do anything that is not in your nature, that doesn't feel natural to you. When I work, I am still connected to my higher self. So perhaps I do not feel drained that easily. I think love is the biggest force on the planet, and when we connect ourselves we find an enormous source of energy within us and then action is just spontaneous, it is not an effort. Whenever there is effort, it drains energy. But when action is spontaneous you will see that enthusiasm and energy remains with you all through.

How do I explain the idea of success to my children in simple straight words?

Question - Gurudev, how do I explain the idea of success to my children in simple straight words? Gurudev Sri Sri - Children do not mind success or failure. For kids I would say leave them as they are and don't try to put a concept of success or failure in their minds. Let them experience life in totality, as it comes to them. For adults I have a different formula. For adults, measure your success by the numbers of hours vou smile. Your smile and your confidence indicates your success. Your fearlessness and ability to share and care for people indicate your success. As far as kids are concerned, tell them that whatever is the result, it is fine. Whether they win a prize or they lose, its okay. If they pass an exam or if they do not do so well, it's okay. Just remind them that they need to pass the exam, need to study little more, and put a little more effort. Do not try to impose this idea that they have to be successful in life. This can become a big tension. Many teenagers ha...

What use is my humility if I am not successful? Humility without success doesn't really mean anything. What do you think?

Question - Gurudev, what use is my humility if I am not successful? Humility without success doesn't really mean anything. What do you think? Gurudev Sri Sri - Arrogance is not going to bring you success, either. Humility does not mean being wiggly, wiggly. Humility does not need to be that way. Humility is friendliness, simplicity, and being natural. If it is that much, it is always good. You cannot be successful in business by being arrogant. If you are arrogant, you will make more losses than gains. This is my understanding, you all should have better experience with it.

I feel that in this world, the intelligent people are full of doubt, while the stupid ones are full of confidence. Why is it so?

Question - Gurudev, I feel that in this world, the intelligent people are full of doubt, while the stupid ones are full of confidence. Why is it so? Gurudev Sri Sri - Doubt, within a limit, is a sign of intelligence. Beyond a limit, it is a disease. If you have self doubt, then you can't do anything. Doubt can clog your intellect like a disease. Also, if you keep on doubting everybody around you, you can't do business. Business depends on trust. Administration depends on trust. Again, a sincere doubt is good, to awaken you towards knowledge. But beyond limit, it can cause heartaches and drag you backwards. Life should be like when you are in a car, where the windshield is big, you have a side mirror, and a little mirror to see the back. Just imagine if your windshield is as small as the rear mirror, and the rear mirror is as big as your windshield, then you are only seeing the past. You can't move anywhere. So, you need to know a little bit about the past. Sometimes, you ne...
