VARUNA MUDRA

Varuna mudra is a simple yoga gesture that is designed to balance the water element in the body. It is a hasta (hand) mudra and one of a series of therapeutic mudras thought to have healing properties. To perform this mudra, the tip of the little finger and the tip of the thumb touch with light pressure, and the other three fingers remain comfortably extended. The name for this gesture comes from the Sanskrit Varun, which is the name of the Hindu god of water, and mudra, meaning “gesture” or “seal.” It is also known as jal-vardhak mudra, which also comes from the Sanskrit, jal, meaning "water," and vardhak, meaning "enhance." Varun mudra helps to increase water element in the body. Our body has 75 percent water.Water plays major role in every activity of our health system.water is present in protoplasm of cells, extracellular fluid, lymph, blood, tears, saliva, mucus, digestive juices, enzymes, hormones, semen, cerebrospinal fluid, etc. Any slight decrease in the pe...

Yoga Can Transform Your Life

Life always moves towards perfection. Just like how water flows down and fire goes up, the nature of life is to move towards perfection, to move towards something bigger and something higher. Often people say that the mind is wavering, but the mind is not wavering. The mind is the wave. It is moving towards something. It is moving towards a higher joy. If you get a little joy, you want some more joy. This is because the mind always moves towards something bigger and something higher. Right from school days, what is it that you want? You want to get a higher grade. Which student does not want to get a higher grade? Which artist does not want to perform better? Which scientist does not want to reach the peak? Which engineer does not want to build something beautiful? So wanting perfection is in the nature of human beings. The mind wants to move towards something higher, and the way to achieve it is Yoga. Yoga Helps You Get Out Of Misery If you are miserable, yoga helps you ge...

Yoga is the rhythm of the breath, and the sensation in the body

Do you know, depression is the biggest challenge for The World Health Organization (WHO) and possibly the world, in the next 5 years. Nearly 40% of the school teachers in Europe are depressed, and if teachers are depressed what are they passing on to the kids? It is scary, right; they can only pass on what they have! When we were children, our teachers were so enthusiastic; they pumped enthusiasm in to the kids. They gave us ideas, ideals, more values, and they showed us how to excel in our field. Today when you see teachers who are supposed to be the guiding light of society being depressed, it is very depressing. We cannot feed half the population with prosaic. After a while even that stops working. Here is where you have to teach them life skills, the skill to handle their mind and their negative emotions. And the secret is right under their nose! Using their own breath, they can calm the mind and change how they feel. You do not have to be a victim of your feelings; you...

'Oh Wow' create an elevation of the spirit

ASTONISHMENT is the preface for Yoga Thousands of miles away and your words here get into this cell phone which is not even connected to a wire. Usually when something is connected with a wire we take it for granted because we see that there is a connection, but here there is not even a solid connection. A cell phone is your hand, you speak and that gets transmitted in this empty space and goes and reaches somewhere so far away. If you just put your mind on this phenomenon you will be amazed. We take this for granted and we just speak on the cell phone and don't even notice the mechanism behind it. If you look into the mechanism you will be in awe. This awe awakens the spirit inside you. That awe takes you to the state of meditation. 'Vismaya Yoga Bhumika': ASTONISHMENT is the preface for Yoga. If you are astonished/stunned, that is when yoga begins, means your spiritual journey begins, meditation begins. So you must be astonished in order to get into yoga or wh...

If YOU HAVE WHAT YOU WANTED, THEN ARE YOU HAPPY?

Vitrushnasya vashikara Sanjna vairagyam  The running mind is an obstruction. An expectation in meditation is an obstruction. You have heard the experience of someone who has said that light appears, that someone comes from heaven and takes you by the hand and that you see him with your eyes closed. All these ideas are the construction of fantasy.  Your desire for pleasure or happiness makes you unhappy. You investigate every time you are unhappy or suffer, behind that is your desire to be happy. You got it? Anxiety for happiness brings suffering. If you don't even crave happiness, then you are happy. You crave happiness and invite suffering. When you don't care about happiness, you are liberated and when you don't even care about liberation, you achieve love. The first step is when you don't care about happiness. The second step is param vairagya (supreme dispassion). When you don't even care about liberation, then you are free. You are liberated. ...

Yoga is the equanimity

"Samatvam yoga ucyate"(Excerpts from Gurudev’s commentary on Bhagavad Gita)   When life is a challenge, that's when all the skills are needed from within you Being calm and peaceful when everything is calm, everything is peaceful, has no meaning. Being peaceful when everything is peaceful is dull and boring. You should create some trouble. You should have some fun. You should have some mischief. When everything is absolutely fine and peaceful and quiet, being peaceful has no meaning, but when everything is falling apart, then being quiet and peaceful – that peace has value. A bottle of water has more worth in a desert than when you are surrounded by water. When you are sitting by a spring, then a bottle of water is of no value to you. One handful from the spring is good enough to quench your thirst. When there is chaos, there is confusion; when there are problems all around you, then calmness is needed the most; wisdom is most valuable then. When people blame ...

All this knowledge will keep your energy high all the time

You are the fountain of love! " "Energy fluctuates, but don't be concerned about it too much. You seem to have too much free time, looking at your own energy, whether it is going up or down. Keep yourself busy. When you are busy, everything falls in place. Where is the time to be unhappy when you are so busy? When you wake up, you have something to do. When you come back, you are so tired, you fall back to sleep. If you keep yourself busy, you have no time to complain, no time to be unhappy. People who are active don’t have time to be depressed. It is only people who are free that feel depressed. Sit and spend time on some wisdom. Read Yoga Vasishta, it is such great knowledge. Listen to the Narada Bhakti Sutra tapes, or Ashtavakra Gita. All this knowledge will keep your energy high all the time, and sing! You can sing alone, or take five minutes longer in the shower and sing. Nobody can prevent you from singing when you are taking a shower! Now, I have given ...

Skill in action is yoga

When aversion comes what happens? You are promoting it. Whatever you are averse to, you stay with it and whatever you crave for, you continue to crave for it.  You allow the craving to continue. Without craving or aversion, moving through the guna is pure skill and that is yoga.  It is said: ‘Yogaha karmasu kaushalam’ - the skill in action is yoga.  Yoga itself means skill. Yoga is the skill to live life, skill to manage your mind, skill to deal with your emotions, skill to be with people, skill to be in love and not let love turn into hatred.  Everyone loves in this world.   Everything loves, but that love does not stay too long as love.  It immediately becomes hatred, almost immediately.  But yoga is that skill, that preservative which maintains love as love throughout.  Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji

Patanjali Yoga Sutras

That is what is visible on the outside. So people go on speaking and relating about what is visible to them. Hatha yoga (a branch or limb of Yoga dealing mostly with postures) is only a very small part of the Ashtanga Yoga (Eightfold path of Yoga). People misunderstand that alone to be what Yoga is all about. It is alright. That is also good for keeping the body healthy and free from diseases. Actually, Patanjali, an ancient sage, defined yoga as the ‘restraining of thought waves'. He compiled ‘Patanjali's Yoga Sutras', the aphorisms of yoga, in which he provides an eight-limbed approach for the well-being and purification of body, mind and soul. This eight-limbed approach, known as Ashtanga Yoga, is not to be mistaken as a step-by-step approach but a multidimensional approach in which all eight limbs are practised simultaneously. The 8 Limbs are 1) Yamas - the five social ethics a) Ahimsa - Non-violence in action, speech and thoughts b) Satyam - Truthfulness in...

Ask about knowledge, about meditation

You know, there are two types of masters in the tradition. 1. Those who would give you boons, "Okay, what is it that you want? Some little things here and there? Okay, have it, but rise above it". Granting boons, giving blessings, and getting you out of the maya (illusion or ignorance). This way they will fulfill all your desires and then you will become centered somewhere on the path. It depends on our strength and capacity. 2. The other types of masters are a little different. They are very tough. If you want something, that's it, you will never have it. If you say that you want to go to Italy, you will never be able to go to Italy. They will go everywhere else but not that place! This was the method or way of saints in those days, so that your desires are removed along with its roots. So that makes you hollow and empty. If you express that you want something, they would do exactly the opposite. They will see to it that you drop your desires, you drop your ...

Some miracles happen instantly and some take time

Gurudev, sometimes I wish that when I answer the doorbell I see you standing outside my door. I wish that when my phone rings it is you calling and I hear your voice. For someone who does sadhana regularly, everything is possible. So shall I wait for my wish to come true? Sri Sri Ravi Shankar :   Yes, absolutely. I will tell you something. One day, I left the Ashram and only one person accompanied me. We just left quietly and nobody knew where we went. So, we drove to a faraway village. On the way, I asked the driver to stop the car outside a small house. I went inside the house and there was a man sitting inside. The man was a simple farmer, who had just a small farm to himself. He had a small television on which he had watched my program. And after watching that program, he had such an intense desire to meet me. He would think, 'How do I meet Gurudev? I can't afford to travel to Bangalore. I have to meet Guruji some way or the other'. And I went and stood at t...

Donation

People are ready to buy expensive clothes for themselves, people are ready to spend a huge amount on their holidays, but they are not ready to give one cent to others for a service project. At least 3 percent of what we earn, we should keep aside for charity work. This converts the 97% percent of your earnings into good money. If you want to use 100% on yourself then that is no good! If the money needs to be pure, it can only be 97% or less (laughs). You are free to use 97% on yourself, but 3% to 5%, you should keep aside for donation. This is because whatever you earn is never enough for yourself! You ask anyone, they all feel, "Oh, there's shortage.” Everyone finds a shortage. So it is not wise to say, "First I will do everything for me and then I will donate to others." We have to do both. It is collective growth that we must aim for. The best form of donation Generosity or sharing what we have with those around us is a divine quality. There are differ...

Vedas

Vedas are simply downloaded information. The Rishis went into deep meditation and what they saw and heard they started sharing. There is a beautiful story that I would like to share with you -- Vedavyasa went to the creator and asked him to please give him knowledge. The creator pointed to a shining mountain and said, "That is knowledge, whatever you can grab you can take". So what he could grab with his hands, that is what the Vedas are today. More than one thousand saints went into deep meditation and whatever they cognized are the Vedas. Ayurveda has a similar story. There were 88,000 saints gathered in a place. They wanted to bring health to the society and so they all gathered to meditate. They needed someone to write down what they cognized and so one of the Rishis, Rishi Bharatwaja volunteered to not meditate and write down what the other saints downloaded while meditating. Today, it is a perfect science – which herb will affect what part of the body. It i...

Full of gratitude

🌸When Amma (Guruji’s mom) breathed her last in 2000, Sri Sri was at Varanasi. There were about 8000 people whom he had to address the very day he lost the person dearest to him. I was with him that day and saw the depth of his silence, serenity and patience in attending to everybody in those difficult moments. Yet the smile did not fade. To the devotees who were with Guruji at the time, and knew of his attachment to Amma, it was a lesson in equanimity. Rajshree Patel recalls: `I always knew he loved his mother very dearly, but I did not realize the depth of his love until after she had passed away. At the International Millennium Course in Italy, a month or so after the passing away of his mother, I discovered yet another dimension to Sri Sri. On one hand everyone is the same to him, his love is impersonal and yet, I was learning, it was deeply personal. We were sitting in an assembly of 1500 to 2000 people. Someone in the front row was holding a magazine with Amma’s photo...

One who sees God in all creation. The other one sees the God who has no form

●There are two types of people: One who sees God in all creation. The other one sees the God who has no form, which is behind the comprehension of five senses. ●Life poses many situations.. When your faith is shaken, do you slip into depression? Then that is no faith at all. In spite of being shaken if faith continues to grow strong then you are on the right track. ●One who lets go of all karmas, offering that to me (Krishna) & being centered, then you are in deep Bhakti. Bhakti is that which takes you away from all the Karmas. ●Whose minds are fixed on me (Krishna), I will lift them from this world of conflicts, cravings, aversions & death. This relative world is the world of death. Here nothing stays, everything dies. ●Be like a shadow in Guru's presence. You don't have to ascertain urself. On the path be like a shadow, a nobody. ●If your intellect is attuned with the Master, there is no doubt that you will rise above the ocean of death. ●The knowledge tha...

Reviewing what all happened last month, the month before, the whole year has some wonderful things

Just imagine you are sitting on the bank of a river and watching the river flow. So many things are flowing in the river. A ship is going in the river, logs are floating, leaves are flowing, some ducks, unfortunately some garbage is also flowing in the river. Imagine you are sitting on the bank of river and watching everything moving, unperturbed.          In the same way when you sit on the bank of time and watch the time carry the events, you are amazed that there is something in you that is not changing, you are not changing, you are unaffected by it. And reviewing the events will help you to be a witness of events rather than a participant of an event.          Reviewing what all happened last month, the month before, the whole year has some wonderful things and some ugly things that have happened in the world scenario and it has all gone. - Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji

Sudarshan Kriya harmonises the whole system cleansing daily and accumulated stresses

What is Sudarshan Kriya ?   Sudarshan Kriya incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath which harmonise the body, mind and emotions. This unique breathing technique eliminates stress, fatigue and negative emotions such as anger, frustration and depression, leaving you calm yet energised, focused yet relaxed. Breath is the link between the body and the mind. For example, when you are angry, the breath is short and fast, when sad, the out-breath is long and heavy. So, we can learn to skilfully use the breath to change the way we feel, hence release the negative emotions called stress - anger, anxiety, depression and worry, leaving the mind completely happy, relaxed and energised. This is where Sudarshan Kriya comes in. Just as there are rhythms in nature - day and night, season after season, similarly, there is a rhythm in the body, mind and emotions. When these rhythms get disturbed, say due to over-working, food habits or busy lifestyle, we feel stressed, discomf...

Oriental False Hawksbeard (Youngia japonica)

Have you noticed this fragile, dandelion-like herb popping up around the roadsides, gardens and wastelands? It is the Oriental False Hawksbeard (Youngia japonica). It is a plant from the dandelion family Asteraceae. Like dandelions, Youngia japonica, grows from a basal rosette of lobed leaves and produces clusters of small, bright yellow flowers. Leaves are hairy and a milky sap is emitted when leaves are torn. Young leaves can be eaten raw or cooked.  Dandelions differ from this in having a sturdier, deeper taproot and a thicker, hollow stem bearing just a single flower cluster. Youngia japonica, on the other hand, bears multiple, smaller flower clusters on slender stems. If you look closely at what seems to be a single flower, is actually a cluster of minuscule strap-like flowers (florets) tightly packed together. When the plant goes to seed, it produces numerous tiny fruits bearing silky “parachute-like” hairs called pa...
