FEATURED ARTIST OF THE DAY - DR. SNG BEE BEE

Dr Sng Bee Bee is a Lecturer in Research Methodology and Academic Writing Skills at local universities in Singapore. She holds a Doctorate in Education, specializing in Education Management from Leicester University, UK, and a Masters of Arts in English Studies from National University of Singapore.

Dr Sng's journey in art started as a hobby to de-stress from teaching, beginning with oil painting before discovering her passion for Chinese painting and calligraphy. For her, art is a space for self-reflection and a means of expressing her love for nature, as seen in the subject matter of her paintings. She has found that her art practice has taught her the importance of patience and perseverance, valuable qualities in her role as a teacher.

Dr Sng's paintings have been exhibited in several exhibitions, including seven held by National Parks during their festivals. Her latest exhibition was at the CDL Gallery in Botanic Gardens. In addition, she has held art workshops for the Philatelic Museum and for children of volunteers working in humanitarian projects in Singapore.

Dr Sng is a strong advocate for humanitarian work and has dedicated 30 years of her teaching experience to disaster relief work, refugee work, and poverty work in Southeast Asia. She believes in using her teaching skills to help the less fortunate and provide them with a brighter future. She has taught Chinese brush painting and calligraphy to children of volunteers working in various countries in Asia and aims to share her passion for teaching and art through art workshops, creating an enjoyable and interactive experience for nature and art enthusiasts alike.

Her works featured here are described as below

1st Painting - Depicts a bird resting on a camellia flower. This painting is done in the Chinese brush painting style known as Xieyi. The meaning of "Xie" in Chinese means "to write" and "Yi" means "the meaning of something". Xieyi uses the techniques of Chinese calligraphy to produce a painting.

2nd Painting - The peonies and the phoenix. The peonies are a classical and favourite subject in Chinese paintings and symbolizes beauty, wealth and status. Its delicate and sophisticated beauty makes it a favourite subject for Chinese paintings. In traditional Chinese culture, the phoenix is a symbol of power conveyed from the heavens to the Empress. A painting of the phoenix hung in a home brings about loyalty and honesty to the residents
