Bangaru Kamakshi Amman Temple, Tanjavur

This temple is also in the heart of the town in the Mela Masi Veedhi. It is hardly around 1.5 Kms from Brahadeeswarar temple and there are city buses from both old and new bus stands. Kumbabishekam was performed during March 2017. Music lovers would definitely remember this temple as Shri Shyama Sastrigal was associated with this temple. He was the oldest among the Carnatic Music Trinity. His forefathers were priests of this temple and he also continued the tradition and most of his Krithis were on this Mother. Devotees who visit this temple will immediately recollect the connected krithis of this scholar.

The idol of the Ambal is made of gold. The meaning of the Telugu word Bangaru is gold and as She is made of gold, She came to be called Bangaru Kamakshi. This temple, like its counterpart in Kanchipuram, is administered by Kanchi Shankara Madam. During the 18th century, several parts of South India witnessed the war between the local chieftains and the English and French armies, which were collectively called Carnatic Wars. They were mainly fought around the Arcot area. Hence the then Kanchi pontiff Shri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati Swamigal V decided to shift the Mutt to a safer zone.

The then Tanjavur ruler Shri Pratap Singh invited the Acharya to shift to Tanjavur. Prior to this shifting, the golden idol of Shri Kamakshi ( Swarna Kamakshi) was shifted to Udayarpalayam, near Tanjavur. When the Acharya accepted the invitation of the King and shifted the Mutt to Tanjavur, the Kamakshi Idol was also brought here and installed and this became the Bangaru Kamakshi Amman Temple. Subsequently, the Mutt was shifted to Kumbakonam. But Kamakshi remained here permanently. Hence the Utsava Idol of Kanchi became the Presiding deity in this temple.

This is a very small temple in a busy street with a small Gopuram at the entrance and is having a single prakaram. It is a north facing temple ( as Kanchi is north of Tanjavur ). After worshipping the Shri Varada Maha Ganapathi, we could have darshan of Ambal. She gives darshan in the standing posture, with a parrot on Her right arm. Her other hand is in a slightly slanting postion below the hip. Her right leg is turned slightly inward ( Tribangam posture ) and this is how She gave darshan to Brahma. She was one of the five Kamakshis in Kanchi. Like the Vishnu temples, Sadari is offered in this temple. The garlands and flowers offered to Her are removed only in the mornings and evenings. Even today, the Tanjavur Prince family sends Thirumangalyam to the Ambal on the Panguni Uttiram day ( Mar-Apl). Once a year ( on the Kanu Pongal day in Jan), Ambal appears in golden skirt.

Though it is a golden idol, the face is surprisingly dark in colour. There is a story behind it. When She was brought from Kanchi to Udayarpalayam in a palanquin, the priests covered the idol with a cloth and smeared the face with Punugu ( excretion of the Civet cat ), an aromatic substance used in Poojas. They also spread a story that the palanquin was carrying a very sick girl child suffering from small pox. This was to fool the wayside robbers and saving the idol. This practice continued even after She was installed in Tanjavur. The continuous use of Punugu has made the face dark. Near the main shrine, there is an east facing shrine housing Shri Kamakoti Amman, once again confirming the connection to Kanchi.

Adjoining the Ambal temple, is a temple for Shri Navaneetha Krishnan with His consorts Rukmani and Sathyabhama. There is a belief that this Krishna finds a place in the Mudra used by Shri Shyama Sastrigal ( Shyama Krishna ). In addition, there are two more temples- Vijayarama and Pratapa Veera Anjaneya- in the vicinity, which are fairly large temples. People who visit Kamakshi temple, also visit these three temples as well. One of the 18 Siddhars, Shri Konkanar, had attained Samadhi here and his Samadhi is also in the same locality.
