SCROPHULARIACEAE

SCROPHULARIACEAE or the figwort family of flowering plants.

ЁЯМ╖It is a large family of about 65 genera and 1,700 species with worldwide distribution. This family is all about being beautiful but they're poor economists. It contains no crop plants of great economic importance but is notable for many ornamental garden plants, such as butterfly bush (Buddleja), Diascia, Nemesia, and many others. But some, such as the mullein (Verbascum), may be troublesome weeds.

ЁЯМ╖Members range from annual herbs to trees.

ЁЯМ╖Leaves are generally simple with smooth or sometimes toothed margins and usually arranged alternately or sometimes oppositely. They lack stipules.

ЁЯМ╖The family is characterized by bilaterally symmetrical, bisexual, tubular flowers with fused petals forming a two-lipped floral tube. The flowers are often produced on long spikes..

ЁЯМ╖Each flower has four stamens in most, two of which are usually shorter than the other two. or when 5 stamens are present, two occur in pairs and the fifth stamen is shorter . The ovary is superior (i.e., positioned above the attachment point of the other flower parts) and usually has two compartments.

ЁЯМ╖Flowers typically mature into a capsule containing many seeds. The dried up style of the pistil can often be seen at the tip of the capsule.

ЁЯМ╖Plants in the Scrophulariaceae family grow in a range of conditions, from sunny, dry Mediterranean scrub to subtropical forests.

ЁЯМ╖The common genera that can be seen here are
1. Buddleja
2. Limnophila
3. Leucophyllum and
4. Russellia
