Bridelia retusa (Spinous Kino Tree , kaji, Khaja, kassi, asana) - Phyllanthaceae. A tree distributed throughout India, in hotter parts along the base of the Himalayas. Spinous Kino Tree is identified by rigid leathery leaves with straight parallel lateral veins and strong spines on the bark of young stems. The plant is pungent, bitter, heating, useful in lumbago, hemiplegia; bark is good for the removal of urinary concretions (Ayurveda). Root and bark are valuable astringents. The young fruits are edible after cooking. Whole plant is used as sedative, diuretic and stomachic. Fruit decoction is used to cure cough; useful in liver and spleen enlargement. Solanum erianthum (Common name: Big Eggplant, Mullein Nightshade, China flowerleaf, Potato tree, Tobacco tree etc.) - Solanaceae, a shrub listed as ‘cultivation escape’, ‘environmental weed’, ‘naturalised’ and ‘weed’ in the Global Compendium of Weeds. In Manipur, decoction of roots is used for bosy pain, vertigo and urinary problems. The Kalpavriksha of Jyotirmath - A Landmark Tree of India: Its India’s oldest living tree, the Himalayan mulberry (Morus serrata) in Joshimath, Near Holy Badrinath in Uttarakhand Himalaya. The Guru Adi Shankaracharya mediated under this tree, who also renovated Badrinath Temple. Now a Shiva Temple is established under this tree and the tree has been protected using iron fencing by the forest department. Dr. Rau, then Deputy Director, Botanical Survey of India, Dehra Dun, estimated the age of this mulberry tree (Rau, MA 1967. The sacred mulberry tree of Joshimath, Chamoli, Uttar Pradesh. Indian Forester 93:333-35) and it was found to be of during that period, when Shankaracharya mediated in Jyotirmath now Joshimath.
